“光”の建築家による独特な空間

「James Turrell（ジェームス タレル）」

ニューヨーク市内に位置する、近現代美術の中心地と言われるソロモン・R・グッゲンハイム美術館にて9月25日（水）まで、米国人アーティスト、ジェーム ス・タレルの個展が開催中。ニューヨークで開かれるタレルの個展としては、実に1980年以来となる。

ジェームス・タレルは「光の存在を意識する」ことを題材にして、自然の光、色、空間と人間の感知を操ってさまざまなインスタレーションを作り上げた。 1960年代後半、光の具体性を表現した彼は高い評価を得て、現代美術の代表的なアーティストとなった。光のビジュアル的な、感情的なパワーを広く表現で きるインスタレーションに生かした。 タレルはアートを通じて、光の存在を改めて教えてくれたといえる。 日常生活のなかで、光は物や場所を照らすという役割を果たしているが、光自体の存在はなかなか認識されていない。タレルは光をひとつの素材として、具体的 に造形するのだ。彼の作品はオブジェクトや写真のように焦点があるわけではないので、観客は作品を見てそれぞれの形で感じとる。この過程によって、光に対 する知覚を自然に蘇らせるというわけだ。タレルが言う“seeing yourself seeing（見ている自分をみる）”という、自分の意識を観察する状態に導くのだ。

今回の展示では彼の初期作「Afrum I （White）」、「lltar（1976）」などのほか、新しく製作した大規模なインスタレーション「Aten Reign（2013）」にも注目。著名な建築家のフランク・ロイド・ライトが手掛けた、グッゲンハイム美術館の代表的なロトンダ（螺旋状の円形）を光で 演出する。自然の光が天窓から美術館に差し込み、館内に設置した巨大なLEDと円錐体の設置と合わせ、空中に浮かんでいる5つの楕円形の光を構成した。タ レルは巨匠フランク・ロイド・ライトのデザインを斬新な演出で構成、作品について“光で構造した建築的な空間”と述べている。

砂漠の死火山を最大のアートプロジェクトに

また、「Aten Reign」の構造はジェームス・タレルの最大規模のランド・アート「Roden Crater（ローデン・クレーター）」を参考したという。アリゾナ州のフラッグスタッフ市外に位置する、現在建設中の「ローデン・クレーター」は死火山 から改造するアートプロジェクト。周辺の砂漠地帯より600フィートの高さにある「ローデン・クレーター」を、展示空間及び裸眼天文台に改造し、自然の 光、太陽や天体の現象とリンクしたライト インスタレーションを設ける。本展には「ローデン・クレーター」の模型、設計図なども展示される。

また、下記の映像はグッゲンハイム美術館が本展のために製作したものであり、展示の様子はもちろん、ジェームス・タレル本人が自分のアートについて語ってくれる。

the first major exhibition in europe since 2005 of ron mueck opened today at the fondation cartier pour l’art contemporain, paris,
unveiling new work by the highly acclaimed london-based artist. to complement six important recent sculptures, the show also
includes three pieces produced especially for the event - two teenagers in the street, a mother and baby and an elderly couple on the beach.


the opus highlights mueck’s distinctive rendition of realism and powerful use of scale, proportion and placement. his meticulously detailed human
figures draw from the world's of pop art and hyperrealism, each sensitively capturing the relationship between two entities. in addition to the artworks,
a new film recording their creation has been made for the occasion by french photographer gautier deblonde, revealing the reclusive artist at work.
the documentation further emphasizes the delicacy of mueck’s skill and pulls into focus his ability to resonate with the collective human condition
through figurative sculpture.

reinterpreting conventional materials in an intriguingly unconventional way; danish ceramic artist christina schou christensen challenges the use of ceramic glaze and earthenware. the collection is exhibited at galerie sofie lachaert in tielrode, belgium, where the unusually constructed pieces are on display. determining the form's properties and possibilities, the artist swaps the role of the material's traditional purpose - the glazing, which usually acts as a mere covering layer in order to protect earthenware, becomes a quirky feature. the viscosity of the glaze, the porosity of the ceramic, the temperature of the kiln and the ever-present gravity lead to mesmerizing creations and unpredictable beauty.
